Ik geloof dat elke quilter een mapquilt (landkaartenquilt) of een colourscape van Alicia Merrett wel eens gezien heeft. Haar fijne gebogen lijntjes die kleurvlakken opdelen en doorsnijden en de bont feest van kleuren zijn haar kenmerken.
Alicia Merrett is geboren en opgegroeid in Argentinië. Al op jonge leeftijd kwam ze met textiel in contact. ze naaide kleding, spullen voor het huis en later verkocht ze stofdieren en poppenkleertjes op schoolmarkten. Ze was ook met fotografie bezig. Ze verhuisde naar Engeland voor de liefde (Zoals ik, hoewel mijn Nederlandse vriend en ik al internet en email adressen hadden en hoefden dus niet weken op brieven wachten). In 1993 tijdens een poppenbeurs in America ontdekte ze patchwork en een tentoonstelling van Art Quilts in London heeft veel indruk op haar gemaakt. Een quilt dat niet per se een warme deken is – dat wilde ze ook maken!
Inspiratie
Haar inspiratie komt uit diverse bronnen: natuur, stedelijk landschap, gebeurtenissen, voorwerpen, literatuur, muziek, kaarten en luchtfoto’s.
Alicia vertelt dat ze sterk beïnvloed is door Afro-Amerikaanse quilters. Ze hadden geen rolmes en geen liniaal en daardoor konden ze nooit helemaal accuraat werken. Daar ligt precies de charme van hun quilts in haar ogen. Kleur is een belangrijke element in Alicia’s werk. Ze beperkt haar werk tot eenvoudige vormen en lijnen.
Haar nieuwste quilts zijn ontstaan vanuit haar belangstelling voor landkaarten. De landkaarten zijn volgens Alicia, zowel een nuttige bron van informatie als een product van de fantasie.
Werwijze en Materialen
Haar favoriete technieken zijn uit de vrije hand en gebogen machine patchwork, plaakbare applicatie en stof collages,vrije hand machine quilten en zeefdrukken tekst op stof. Ze heeft ook geëxperimenteerd met afdrukken van computer afbeeldingen op stof .
Alicia werkt hoofdzakelijk met de naaimachine en verft haar stoffen zelf. Ze gebruikt zelden commerciele stoffen, maar kiest altijd voor handgeverfde stoffen. Hun gevarieerde textuur geeft haar quilts een extra dimensie. Daarnaast gebruikt ze graag stoffen van Heide stoll-Weber en Laura Wasilowski.
Alicia heeft een aantal quilts gemaakt met landschappen en stadsgezichten. Voor deze “colourscapes” gebruikt ze de techniek: collages maken met vliesofix. De vliesofix strijkt ze op de achterkant van de stoffen waarna ze er gedetaillerde vormpjes uit knipt.

Alicia Merrett was born and raised in Argentina. At a young age she came in contact with textiles. she sewed clothes, stuff for the house and later sold fabric animals and doll clothes at school markets. She was also busy with photography. She moved to England for love (Like me, although my Dutch friend and I had internet and email addresses and therefore did not have to wait weeks for letters as Alicia and her husband). In 1993, during a puppet show in America she discovered patchwork and an exhibition of Art Quilts in London has made a big impression on her. A quilt that is not necessarily a warm blanket – that is something she wanted to make!
Inspiration
Her inspiration comes from many sources: nature, urban landscape, events, objects, literature, music, maps and aerial views. Alicia says she is heavily influenced by African American quilters. They had no rotary cutter and a ruler and therefore they could never work accurate. That is exactly the charm of their quilts in her eyes.
Color is an important element in Alicia’s work. She limited her work to simple shapes and lines. Her latest quilts arose from her interest in maps. The maps are as Alicia explains, both a useful source of information as a product of the imagination.
Techniques and Materials
Her favorite techniques are freehand and curved machine piecing, ironed application and fabric collages, freehand machine quilting and screen printing text on fabric. She also experimented with computer graphics printing on fabric. Alicia works primarily with the sewing machine and dyes her own fabrics. She rarely uses commercial fabrics, but always choose for hand-dyed fabrics. Their varied texture gives her quilts an extra dimension. She also likes to use fabrics of Heide stoll-Weber and Laura Wasilowski.. Alicia has a number of quilts made with landscapes and cityscapes. For this “colorscapes” She used the technique: fusible web collages. She ironed vliesofix on the back of the fabrics and then cut out detailed shapes.
