Nancy Crow is een van de meest invloedrijkste personen in de geschiedenis van quilten. Nancy Crow maakte meer dan 300 quilts sinds ze in mijn geboortejaar 1976 begon te quilten, haar workshops zijn zeer bekend en ze is mede-oprichter van Quilt National. Ze woont op een boerderij in Columbus, Ohio.
Ze begon traditionele quilts te maken: grote composities met behulp van sjablonen, maar later besefte ze dat templates beperkten haar. Ze vond dat snijden van vormen, of het nu met een schaar of een rolmes, is net zoals tekenen en zo begon ze meer improvisatorisch te werken. Dat is ook wat haar studenten leren in haar gevorderde klassen: je moet beginnen denken aan het snijden als tekenen. Het [schaar of rolmes] is het dichtste wat op een pen of een potlood lijkt die quilters kunnen hebben. Het grote verschil voor ons is natuurlijk dat het resultaat is ofwel goed of we een stukje stof hebben geruïneerd.
Techniek
Haar stijl van quilten is hedendaags, maar haar quilts zijn ook traditioneel in dat ze de stoffen aan elkaar naait en met de hand quilt. Het ontstaat met het zien van vormen in haar hoofd en nadenken hoe ze de vormen uit haar enorme palet van kleuren gaat snijden. Het palet dat ze zelf met de hand geverfd heeft in de kelder van haar studio.
Inspiratie
Nancy’s quilts staan bekend om hun uitzonderlijke gebruik van lijn en kleur. Al haar werk heeft een zeer sterke emotionele ondertoon die ze niet altijd kenbaar maakt aan de mensen, zegt ze. Nancy wordt overal geïnspireerd en ze wordt beïnvloed door diverse bronnen: haar reizen, natuur, sociale kwesties, politiek …
Toen ze 19 was ging ze naar Mexico City om daar te studeren. Omdat ze zo jong geïntroduceerd werd in Mexico, houdt ze van grafische beelden; dat is de reden waarom haar werk zo kleurrijk en levendig is.

Her early work was traditional quilt making: huge compositions using templates but later she realized that templates were too restricting. She found that any kind of cutting, whether with scissors or a rotary cutter, is like drawing and so she started working more improvisationally. That’s is what she teaches in her advanced classes: you have to start thinking of cutting as drawing. It’s the closest thing quilters have to a pen or a pencil. The big difference for us, of course, is that the result is either good to go or we’ve ruined a piece of fabric.
Technique
Her style of quiltmaking is contemporary but her quilts are traditional in that they are pieced and hand-quilted. she begin with seeing shapes in her head and think about how to cut them out of her huge palette of colors that she hand-dyed in the basement dye studio

Nancy’s quilts are known for their exceptional use of line and color. All her work has a very strong emotional underlay which she doesn’t necessarily write up or let people know about, she says. Inspiration for Nancy comes from everywhere as she is influenced by diverse sources: her travels, nature, social issues, politics…
When she was 19 she went to Mexico City and studied there. Nancy says that because she was introduced to Mexico so young, she loves graphic imagery; that’s why her work is so colorful and vibrant.

I’m 66 and I have made a decision and promise to myself that my work is going to keep growing and changing. I’m not interested in plateauing and doing the same thing. As long as I’m physically able, that’s my promise to myself.
