“25 jaar geleden had ik er niet van kunnen dromen om een quilt lerares te worden. In feite vond ik aan naaien helemaal niets aan.”
Zo begint Vikki Pinatelli het verhaal over de geboorde van haar boek “Nurture Your Creative Spirit”. Ik vind het bijzonder dat een full-time professionele quilt-kunstenares als Vikki Pinatelli, ontwerpster, internationaal lerares,en schrijfster van boeken heeft pas 25 jaar geleden haar eerste naailes! Dat geeft hoop!
Vroeger experimenteerde ze in schilderijen met olieverf en aquarel, beeldhouwen en andere kunstnijverheid mediums en leerde zichzelf in alle kunstvormen. Het feit dat ze zichzelf een autodidact noemt spreekt me erg aan.
Vikki is ook de oprichter en mede-voorzitter van de nationale tweejaarlijkse Sacred Thread Quilt Exhibitions, waarin originele kunstwerk is getoond dat thema’s zoals spiritualiteit, vreugde, inspiratie, genezing en verdriet verkent. De tentoonstelling wordt gehouden in Ohio, USA.
Techniek:
De gebogen vorm sprak Vikki Pignatelli altijd aan , in de natuur en kunst. Dus als ze met quilten begon werd ze tot quilts met prachtige en ingewikkelde golven en gebogen patronen aangetrokken. Traditioneel piecing techniek was frustrerend omdat het is haar steeds niet gelukt om de naden plat laten liggen zoals ze wilde.
Ze ontwikkelde haar eigen eenvoudige lagen techniek die een mix van patchwork en appliqueren is met behulp van diepvries-papieren sjablonen (freezer paper) en stof verstevigingen. Ze schreef twee boeken over deze techniek, “Quilting Curves” en “Quilten by Improvisation”
Inspiratie:
Vikki kijkt naar de natuur voor inspiratie voor haar quilts. Ze heeft water, bloemen, bomen en zelfs kikkers gequilt. Ze neemt haar camera mee en maakt foto’s van scènes die haar roert en vervolgens herschept de indruk van een scène (niet de scène zelf, dat is wat de camera doet) in haar quilts.
Andere quilts illustreren thema’s als genezing, spiritualiteit, hoop en inspiratie.

“Twenty-five years ago, I never would have dreamed of becoming a quilt teacher. In fact I hated sewing.
Vikki Pinatelli begins the story about creating her book “Nurture Your Creative Spirit”. I find it really special that a full-time professional quilt artist as Vikki Pinatelli, designer, international teacher, and author of books had only 25 years ago her first sewing lesson!
That gives hope!
In her younger years, she experimented in paintings with oils and watercolor, sculpturing and other craft mediums and was self-taught in all the art forms. The fact that she calls herself an autodidact also appeals to me.
Vikki is also the founder and co-chairwoman of the national biennial Sacred Thread Quilt Exhibitions, displaying original artwork that explores themes of spirituality, joy, inspiration, healing and grief. The show is held in Ohio.
Techniques
The curved shape has always appeald to Vikki Pignatelli, in nature and art. so when she began quilting she was drawn to quilts with beautiful and intricate waves and curved pattern. coverntional piecing techniques was frustrating her because she couldn’t get her seams to lie flat as she wanted them to.
Then she developed her own simple layering technique that is a blend of piecing and appliqué using freezer-paper templates and fabric stabilizer . She has written 2 books featuring this technique, “Quilting Curves” and “Quilting By Improvisation”
Inspiration:
Vikki looks to nature for inspiration for her quilts. She quilted water, flowers, trees and even frogs. She takes her camera and makes photo’s of scenes that moves her and then re-create the impression of a scene (not the scene itself, that is what the camera does) in her quilts.
Other quilts illustrate themes as healing, spirituality, hope and inspiration.
